Marquee Wedding in Kent: A Countryside Celebration
There is something particularly special about a marquee wedding in Kent.

The setting was already beautiful, but what made the celebration so memorable was the way the couple used it. Rather than asking guests to remain in one place throughout the afternoon, each part of the day unfolded across a different area of the grounds.
It gave the celebration a natural sense of movement. Guests were not simply waiting for the next scheduled moment. They were being drawn into it.
That is one of the things I love most about photographing weddings on private land. The day can unfold in a way that feels completely natural to the setting, rather than being shaped around the existing layout of a traditional venue.

I also photographed parts of this marquee wedding on 35mm film. After the ceremony, guests gathered on the lawn for champagne and canapés.
It could easily have felt like a traditional garden reception, but the couple had planned something a little less expected: a roaming live band featuring saxophone, drums and trombone.
The musicians moved through the crowd, playing instrumental versions of recognisable pop songs. There was no stage and no formal performance. The music became part of the reception itself.
Guests sang along, danced on the grass and gathered around the band as they moved between them. It created an immediate sense of ease and gave everyone something to share, particularly guests who may not have known one another before the day.
By the time dinner approached, the celebration already felt wonderfully alive.
For a wedding spread across a large garden or private estate, roaming musicians can also help connect different parts of the space. The entertainment moves with your guests, rather than asking everyone to gather around a fixed stage.
From a photography point of view, this kind of entertainment creates the most brilliant opportunities for natural, expressive photographs. Guests are reacting to what is happening around them, rather than feeling conscious of the camera.
How Do You Move Guests Into a Wedding Marquee?
This is one of the less glamorous questions involved in planning a marquee wedding, but it matters.
Moving a large number of relaxed, champagne-holding guests from a lawn into a marquee can easily become a series of announcements, repeated instructions and people wondering whether they are supposed to have taken their seats yet.
At this wedding, the transition became part of the entertainment.
As the drinks reception came to an end, the musicians began to move towards the marquee. Guests naturally followed them across the grounds, creating an informal procession led by saxophone, drums and trombone.
Nobody needed to be hurried or repeatedly called inside. The music carried the atmosphere from one part of the day into the next.
By the time guests reached the marquee, the room already had energy. Dinner and speeches did not feel like the beginning of a separate event. They felt like the continuation of everything that had already been building outside.
It was joyful, effortless and one of those deceptively simple decisions that completely changed how the day felt.

Caterers, bar refrigeration, lighting, sound equipment and live music may all be drawing power at the same time. An experienced marquee or production company should be able to advise on event-grade generators, distribution and backup power.
Quiet generators are particularly important during ceremonies, speeches and dinner. Nobody wants a heartfelt speech competing with the mechanical growl of a generator behind the hedge.
Toilets
Domestic bathrooms are rarely suitable for a large number of guests throughout an entire wedding day.
Luxury toilet trailers can be positioned discreetly away from the main celebration and are far removed from the festival toilets people often imagine. Many include proper lighting, mirrors, running water and interiors designed to feel like part of the event rather than an unfortunate necessity.
Catering Space and Water
Your caterers will need their own practical working area, often in a separate catering tent positioned behind or beside the main marquee.
They may require level flooring, lighting, power, waste arrangements and access to fresh water. Discussing this early avoids last-minute compromises and means the beautiful guest-facing areas can remain exactly that.
Flooring and Ground Conditions
Even during summer, British weather remains cheerfully unwilling to follow instructions.
Grass can become worn, slippery or uneven surprisingly quickly, particularly around entrances, bars and pathways. Solid marquee flooring creates a stable surface for dining, dancing and high heels, while trackways or matting may be useful between key areas of the site.
It is also worth thinking about vehicle access. Suppliers will need to reach the site during setup, often with heavy equipment, and may need an alternative plan if the ground becomes soft.
How Do You Make a Wedding Marquee Feel Warm and Intimate?
A marquee is a blank canvas, which is both its greatest strength and its biggest challenge.
Without thoughtful lighting, texture and layout, even a beautiful structure can feel like one large white room. The most successful marquee weddings create smaller pockets of atmosphere within the wider space.

A central bar naturally draws people together, while soft seating creates somewhere quieter to sit between dinner and dancing. A clearly defined dance floor helps the evening feel intentional, and outdoor seating or fire pits can extend the celebration beyond the marquee itself.

Open sides, clear panels and thoughtfully positioned entrances can frame the surrounding fields or gardens. Foliage-heavy florals and natural materials can bring elements of the outside into the marquee without making the design feel themed.
The most beautiful spaces often feel as though they belong exactly where they have been placed.
